County Leitrim is the ideal location where Carrickcraft established it’s first Marina back in 1970.  The town has changed a lot, but move a mile up or down the river and it looks like time has stood still for 50 years.

Our Carrick-on-Shannon marina station bustles with cruisers and cosmopolitan crews busily preparing to cast off for their waterway adventures. The small pretty town is Ireland’s cruising centre, offering a rich choice of provisions as well as a wide selection of pubs and restaurants.

The Upper Shannon is probably the most lively section of the river. There are plenty of small villages along the way with good moorings and facilities.

Leitrim

Leitrim Village Marina, Shannon Erne Waterway
A popular stop off as the entrance to the Shannon Erne Waterway, this small village has a number of dining options, including the Leitrim Marina Hotel and Leitrim Inn and Blueway Lodge.

Drumshanbo

Take a cruise along the Lough Allen Canal to Acres Lake and enjoy a walk along Ireland’s only floating boardwalk. The pretty village of Drumshanbo is surrounded by the Sliabh an Iarainn mountains.

Lough Key Forest Park

One of the most popular locations for family adventures including Boda Borg Challenge, a Looking Tower with spectacular views across the lough and zipline with circuits for adults and children.

Boyle

A large, modern town with a rich history. Visit Boyle Abbey, which dates to 1161 or King House, once home of the “Kings of Connaught”. The cruise across Lough Key will reveal many interesting, historic islands.

Dromod

Cruising south of Carrick-on-Shannon will take you to the picturesque little village of Dromod with a choice of very good restaurants including Cox’s Steakhouse which is highly recommended.

Rooskey

Home of Shannon River Adventure, where you will find lots of fun-filled activities on water and land. Or you could find a quiet mooring near the bridge and take a walk into the town to explore.

Hodson Bay

Take in a round of golf at Athlone Golf Club, visit the inflatable water park at Bay Sports, or relax and enjoy a fabulous meal at Hodson Bay Hotel.

Killinure

The Inner Lakes of Killinure, Ballykeeran and Coosan are a fisherman’s paradise. The marshes and reedbeds provide a habitat for interesting plants and flowers, in particular many species of orchid.

Lanesborough

Famous for having the first turf-fired electricty generator in Ireland, which creates a hot water stretch, making this area popular for fishing. Also home to the Lough Ree Distillery, makers of gin and whiskey.

Boyle

Head up the scenic Boyle River, north of Carrick-on-Shannon and into Lough Key, one of the most beautiful lakes on the Shannon and then into Boyle for your first night.

Dromod

Back to Carrick-on-Shannon and head south to the picturesque little village of Dromod with a choice of very good restaurants including Cox’s Steakhouse which is highly recommended.

Tarmonbarry

Tarmonbarry-Lock
Dine at Keenan’s Hotel or the Purple Onion, with its own Art Gallery. Or you could take a short taxi journey to Strokestown Park House and Gardens, which incorporates the National Famine Museum.

Glasson

Known as the “Village of the Roses”, Glasson is well-known for its exceptional restaurants. Or you could take in a round of golf at one of the most scenic golf courses in Ireland.

Athlone

The largest town on the Shannon and known as The Centre of Ireland. Have a pint of Guinness at Sean’s Bar, the oldest pub in Ireland, or visit the historic Athlone Castle.

Banagher

Nature lovers will enjoy the variety of bird and plant life and the sound of the corncrake around the meadows and peatlands on both sides of the river in this area, known as the Shannon Callows.

Terryglass

A charming little village on the eastern shores of Lough Derg. The marina alone is worth a visit with its picnic area, children’s play area and breathtaking views of Lough Derg.

Garrykennedy

Spectacular views of Lough Derg from this old harbour. A very popular stop for fans of traditional Irish music as both pubs in the village, Larkin’s and Ciss Ryans have regular music sessions.

Killaloe

The most southern navigable point on the Shannon is the 13-arch stone bridge separating the twin towns of Ballina and Killlaloe. Famous as the home of Brian Boru, the legendary High King of Ireland.

Portumna

Moor at Castle Harbour and visit Portumna Castle and Gardens. The Forest Park contains 1500 acres of parkland with an abundance of flora and fauna including a herd of rare Irish red deer.

Clonmacnoise

One of the great monastic cities of early Europe, founded by St. Ciaran in 545 AD. There are now a number of churches (10th to 13th century), 2 round towers, 3 high celtic crosses and stone temples.
