Banagher marina in County Offaly is ideally placed to cruise the Shannon south of Athlone and into Lough Derg.
The Lower Shannon lazes through undulating lush countryside that is steeped in history as well as real Irish character. The river slowly snakes past Clonmacnoise, the ancient Christian capital of Ireland and into the great expanse of Lough Derg.

Life slows down along this stretch of the Shannon and boats begin to pass less frequently – the noise of nature takes over once more.

Banagher

Shannonbridge

The first stop north of Banagher, where the River Suck meets the Shannon. The famous 16 arch bridge is one of the oldest across the Shannon and the Napoleonic fortifications can still be seen today

Athlone

The largest town on the Shannon and known as The Centre of Ireland. Have a pint of Guinness at Sean’s Bar, the oldest pub in Ireland, or visit the historic Athlone Castle.

Hodson Bay

Take in a round of golf at Athlone Golf Club, visit the inflatable water park at Bay Sports, or relax and enjoy a fabulous meal at Hodson Bay Hotel.

Killinure

The Inner Lakes of Killinure, Ballykeeran and Coosan are a fisherman’s paradise. The marshes and reedbeds provide a habitat for interesting plants and flowers, in particular many species of orchid.

Clonmacnoise

One of the great monastic cities of early Europe, founded by St. Ciaran in 545 AD. There are now a number of churches (10th to 13th century), 2 round towers, 3 high celtic crosses and stone temples.

Terryglass

A charming little village on the eastern shores of Lough Derg. The marina alone is worth a visit with its picnic area, children’s play area and breathtaking views of Lough Derg.

Garrykennedy

Spectacular views of Lough Derg from this old harbour. A very popular stop for fans of traditional Irish music as both pubs in the village, Larkin’s and Ciss Ryans have regular music sessions.

Killaloe

The most southern navigable point on the Shannon is the 13-arch stone bridge separating the twin towns of Ballina and Killlaloe. Famous as the home of Brian Boru, the legendary High King of Ireland.

Mountshannon

Enjoy the fantastic views of Lough Derg and the surrounding area. On a sunny day, spend some time at the small beach area beside the marina or take a trip in your dinghy to Holy Island.

Moor at Castle Harbour and visit Portumna Castle and Gardens. The Forest Park contains 1500 acres of parkland with an abundance of flora and fauna including a herd of rare Irish red deer.

Known as the “Village of the Roses”, Glasson is well-known for its exceptional restaurants. Or you could take in a round of golf at one of the most scenic golf courses in Ireland.

Lanesborough

Famous for having the first turf-fired electricty generator in Ireland, which creates a hot water stretch, making this area popular for fishing. Also home to the Lough Ree Distillery, makers of gin and whiskey.

Dromod

A picturesque little village with a choice of very good restaurants including Cox’s Steakhouse which is highly recommended. Also home to the historic Cavan and Leitrim Narrow Gauge Railway

Lough Key Forest Park

One of the most popular locations for family adventures including Boda Borg Challenge, a Looking Tower with spectacular views across the lough and zipline with circuits for adults and children.

Carrick-on-Shannon
